Ralph The Magical Elf: Not a Christmas Story by Brian Harold is an upbeat and optimistic story that is told in a delightful rhyme. Ralph is a magical elf and his job is to make sure that Joe does not quit playing baseball in spite of the fact, "He had just struck out twice, two times in a row. And to make matters worse, he had just stubbed his toe." Ralph continues to follow Joe and tries to talk him into giving the game of baseball another chance. Ralph is persistent and persuasive as he tells Joe, "Happiness is what we must achieve. But in order to have it you've got to believe. It's important in life to learn not to quit. If your struck out twice you can still get a hit."
Joe agrees to give baseball another chance, but starts the game with strike one. Then he has strike two! But on the third try, "Joe followed the pitch with a powerful crack. He sent the ball flying back, back, back! A futile attempt was made for the ball. But it sailed past two gloves and rolled to the wall." The story ends with a smiling and triumphant Joe who has just hit his first home run!
