Cakes, Donuts, Pies, Baking Storytime!

This week I had two class visits. One class was PreK-K and the other class was 1st and 2nd graders. Their teacher wanted a story time with the theme of baking and mentioned that the children would be making cupcakes that week
The first class that I had was the PreK-K and there where 20 children in that class. The first book that I read was Anna Banana and the Chocolate Explosion written by Dominique Rogers and illustrated by Alexis Dormat. This book is a delightful tale about a girl and her stuffed animals who attempt to make a chocolate cake. At first they fail miserably especially when Fuzzball sends the bowl of chocolate batter flying through the window! But Grizzler already has a perfect chocolate cake. How did he do it? Anna and the rest of the stuffed animals discover his secret when they follow Grizzler to the bakery. With Grizzler's help, Anna and the rest of the stuffed animals bake a perfect chocolate cake! The whimsical humorous illustrations really help make this book come alive. I love the descriptions on Anna and Fuzzball's faces!
The second book that I read was I'll Wait, Mr. Panda by Steve Antony. This book features a panda who is baking something, but what is he baking? Panda tells everybody who stops by to "Wait and see. It's a surprise." But the llama, the anteater, the rabbits, and the bird lose patience and leave. Only the penguin remains and he is awarded with a huge donut!
The second class consisted of fourteen 1st and 2nd graders. The first book that I read was How to Make an Apple Pie and see the world by Marjorie Priceman. This delightful book takes the heroine and the reader to different countries to find all of the ingredients that are used to bake an apple pie. You go to Italy to gather wheat, go to France to get a chicken, go to Sri Lanka to get cinnamon, go to England to get a cow for milk, go to Jamaica to get sugar, and finally go to Vermont to get apples. Now you are ready to make your apple pie!
The next books that I read are classics. I read The Red Hen by Rebecca and Ed Emberley and Bunny Cakes by Rosemary Wells.
Additional Books That I Had, But Did Not Read
