I started my baby and toddler story time by reading Bear & Hare Snow! by Emily Gravett. Bear & Hare go out together to play in the snow. Hare loves the snow. Bear .... well he's not too sure about this snow. When Bear tries to make snow prints, he falls through the snow. Hare builds a snow hare, but bear just gets covered in an avalanche of snow falling down from a tree branch. At first, Bear is not too sure about sledding, especially since he is backwards on the sled. But once he goes sledding face first with Hare riding on his back, he loves it! The illustrations in this book are large enough for a story time. They are also vivid, colorful, and expressive. You can see the emotions of Hare and Bear on their faces.
The next book that I read was Oh! by Kevin Henkes. After the snow falls all night and blankets the ground, everybody comes on to play, The squirrel that "skitters", the rabbit that hops, the cat that sneaks, the dog that runs, the children that jump, and the birds that fly. The illustrations are bright, colorful, and vivid. They are also large enough to be used during the story time. I particularly like how the children build a snow bunny instead a snowman. In the evening, "the sky grows dark and the snow turns blue". Play time is over for everyone and they go to bed. The book ends with "Rush on home. Good-bye, snow. See you again tomorrow." Then the children, dog, and cat look outside the window together and watch the snow falling down.
Other books that I had, but did not read are shown below.
