Kingdom Cold

I received a copy of this as an ARC in exchange for an honest review. I loved it! I was a bit wary when I found out that this is a self-published book because some self-published books that I have read in the past have been lacking in content and appeal. This book was not! In fact, it excelled in both. I really enjoyed the way the author kept throwing in plot twists throughout the novel - I never knew what was going to happen next. This made this book extremely difficult to put down. I appreciated the fact that the princess was from a different racial/ethnic group and also the fact that her behavior was definitely not the sweet, kind, pliable behavior we expect from a traditional old-fashioned princess! At the beginning of the book, we first meet Charlotte when she is upset about being forced to marry a man she does not know. In fact, she shoots an arrow at him from the castle walls! When a battle starts, Charlotte's fiance, Young, rushes back to the castle to save Charlotte - but Charlotte doesn't need saving. When soldiers have invaded the castle and threatened her and her maid, Milly, Charlotte kills the soldiers with a fire-iron. In Brittni Chenelle's words, "The princess stood above them, unscathed, holding a blood-spattered iron rod still glowing red". I also liked the way that Charlotte and Young's relationship developed.

I do think that the novel would have benefited from the services of a good copy editor and there were a lot of cliches throughout the novel. That said, however, this novel was a delight to read and I hope that there will be more novels from Brittni Chenelle to read in the future.
